
Team USA’s Marina Stefanoni and Timmy Brownell opened up their PSA season with five-game first-round wins at the PSA Diamond CIB Egyptian Open Friday, September 12, in Cairo.
The Egpytian Open is one of two PSA Diamond events on the PSA World Tour Calendar, featuring qualifying draws and main draws of forty-eight players. Early rounds are held at the O West Complex before late main draw matches shift to the stunning glass court staged by the Great Pyramids.
The women’s draw will feature an All-American second round clash between Marina Stefanoni and Amanda Sobhy after Stefanoni recorded a first-round victory Friday.
Stefanoni, world No. 26, opened up her PSA season with a hard-fought win over Spain’s world No. 58 Marta Dominguez 11-8, 8-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-6 in sixty minutes.
World No. 9 Sobhy awaits Stefanoni in what will be a rematch of June’s U.S. Championships semifinals which Sobhy edged 12-10 in the fifth. The second round match will take place Saturday, September 13, at 4:45pm local time, 9:45am ET.
Brownell, world No. 35, overcame Swiss veteran Nicholas Mueller in their second career match up. The American came back from dropping the first two games 6-11. 8-11, 11-2, 11-8, 11-2 in forty-two minutes.
Brownell will take on seventeen-year-old Egyptian prodigy Mohamad Zakaria Saturday at 2:15pm local time, 7:15am ET.
