The first ever PSA Diamond tournament, the CIB Egyptian Open, will feature four Americans this weekend as Marina Stefanoni, Timmy Brownell, Sabrina Sobhy and Amanda Sobhy open their 2024-2025 campaigns August 30-31, at the O West Complex in Cairo, Egypt.
The 2024-2025 PSA World Tour season will introduce a new tour format and expanded tiers of events. Diamond are the highest tier event with a minimum of $600,000 prize money. Diamond events employ a forty-eight-player main draws with thirty-two-player qualification draws. The Egyptian Open and British Open are the only two Diamond events for the upcoming season.
Twenty-one-year-old Stefanoni opens up her first season as a full-time professional with an Egyptian Open main draw debut after progressing through the qualifying draw. Stefanoni dropped just one game across three wins in the qualifying draw, and will face former Harvard teammate Hanna Moataz in the first round Friday, August 30, at 11am ET.
U.S. Champion Timmy Brownell enters the new season with a career-high ranking of world No. 29. The twenty-seven-year-old will make his Egyptian Open debut against Egypt’s world No. 20 Mohamed El Sherbini Friday at 9:15am ET.
Both Sobhy sisters will join the action in the second round on Saturday, August 31.
World No. 14 Sabrina Sobhy earns a 9/16 seeding, but faces a challenging draw against world No. 1 and seven-time world champion Nour El Sherbini at 6:30am ET.
World No. 10 Amanda Sobhy will make her competitive comeback from injury against the winner of England’s Grace Gear or Malaysia’s Rachel Arnold at 10:30am ET. Should Sobhy progress to the third round, she would likely face World Champion Nouran Gohar.
World No. 6 Olivia Weaver was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to injury.
