Prockop Defends British Open Masters Title; Gough and Le Cheminant Reach Finals

(l-r) Team USA’s men’s 45+ finalist Galen Le Cheminant, Women’s 45+ champion Hope Prockop, men’s 75+ finalist Michael Gough.

Five members of Team USA traveled across the pond to compete in the 2017 British Open Masters June 8-11, at Colets Health Club in Thames Ditton, Southwest London.

For the third consecutive year, Hope Prockop won the women’s 45+ title. The Boston native didn’t drop a game on her way to the title, defeating former California-based Irishwoman Orla O’Doherty in the final.

2016 Men’s 75+ champion Michael Gough fell just short of defending his title. The Atlanta, Georgia, representative lost out in a four-game final against top seed and defending world champion Adrian Wright.

Unseeded Galen Le Cheminant made a surprise run to the men’s 45+ final. The South Carolina teaching professional upset the two seed in the quarterfinals and 3/4 seed in the semifinals—both in five games—to reach the final, where he lost against top seed Nick Taylor.

New York City pro John Musto reached the men’s 45+ quarterfinals, where he lost a close five-gamer against 3/4 seed Jonathan Gliddon. Salt Lake City’s Bert Kornyei competed in the men’s 70+ division for the second straight year.

“Team USA enjoyed a week of squash and friendship,” Prockop said. “Our five players, with a few spouses along, bonded and supported each other fiercely and managed to recruit a few overseas additions to the upcoming 2018 World Masters in Charlottesville.”
