Team USA’s Sabrina Sobhy lifted her second PSA title of 2019, and first since becoming a full-time professional, at the $12,000 London Open Sunday, November 24, at the Cumberland Club.
Sobhy, world No. 52, entered the draw as the lone American representative and the tournament’s six seed. After a three-game win to open the tournament, Sobhy took out English four seed Rachael Chadwick 11-6, 11-1, 11-2 in twenty-two minutes. The twenty-two-year-old produced another upset in the semifinals over Egypt’s two seed Menna Nasser, prevailing 11-8, 11-4, 8-11, 11-7 in forty-seven minutes.
In the final, Sobhy met England’s top seed Jasmine Hutton, who is currently ranked one position above Sobhy at world No. 51. The final proved to be all-Sobhy, who stormed through the final 11-4, 11-5, 11-2 in thirty-five minutes.
The London Open mark’s the Sea Cliff, New York-native’s third career PSA title, second of 2019 and first since beginning her full-time professional career after graduating from Harvard in the spring. The title is also her largest title to date, exceeding the $11,000 EM Noll Classic draw in February. This summer, Sobhy celebrated the start of her career by earning two gold medals for Team USA at the Pan American Games.
Sobhy continues her busy touring schedule in December with two tournaments on deck. First, Sobhy travels to Monaco for the $20,000 Monte Carlo Classic, December 9-13, where she is seeded sixth. Pakistan awaits after Monaco, December 15-19, where Sobhy enters the $12,000 Serena Huawei Pakistan International Squash Tournament as the two seed.
