The U.S. Junior Women’s Team secured top spot in Pool C with a crucial victory against five seeds England, coming back from a match down to win 2-1 Tuesday, July 25, in Melbourne, Australia.
The match up between the third-seeded U.S. and fifth seeded England was played with a 1-3-2 string order with No. 1’s Caroline Fouts and Asia Harris opening proceedings.
Fouts took an early 2-0 lead, but Harris fought back to win the next three games and match for England.
No. 3 Riya Navani stepped on court next and leveled the score for the U.S. with a 3-0 win over Isabella Mccullough.
No. 2 Madison Ho completed the comeback for Team USA, delivering a 3-0 win against Amelie Haworth and moving the U.S. on top of Pool C.
“I just came in thinking ‘try not to think about the scoreline and just focus on what’s happening on court,” Ho said. “I was going to do whatever it takes. I thought of the win as being like A-Z, I had to get through each letter first. I’m very happy, and grateful to my teammates for supporting me. It was a great battle!”
Team USA’s final Pool C match on Wednesday was a routine 3-0 win over fourteen seeds Chinese Taipei. Caroline Fouts, Riya Navani and Emma Trauber all delivered 3-0 wins in under fifteen minutes.
The U.S. fulfills their three seed as a result of their Pool C play, and take their place in the bottom half of the 1-8 main draw. Team USA will take on six seeds India who placed second in Pool D behind four seeds Hong Kong.
