Weaver to Face World No. 1 El Sherbini in ToC Quarterfinals

Olivia Weaver

Team USA’s Olivia Weaver will face world No. 1 and four-time champion Nour El Sherbini in Grand Central Terminal for a chance to reach the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions semifinals Monday, January 22, in New York City.

The American world No. 10 and eight seed sealed her place in the last eighth with a clinical three-game victory over England’s Lucy Beecroft Saturday afternoon. Weaver advanced 11-6, 11-7, 11-8 in thirty-three minutes to set up a clash with defending champion and world No. 1 Nour E Sherbini Monday evening at 5pm ET.

“I’m feeling great,” Weaver said afterwards. “It was a great opportunity for both of us: first time for me getting through to the quarters and Lucy had a big win to get to today and I knew she would be up for it. She was playing in front of a lot of friends and family so I knew we were both going to be up for it. The game plan was to limit her opportunities. When she has time on the ball she’s really dangerous and as you could see, she was really firing those drops from the back and I knew that was going to be one of her best shots so I had to cover that. I had to play my game and make it physical.”

Monday’s match up will mark Weaver’s second ToC quarterfinal appearance, but first as a PSA Platinum event.

Weaver is the only remaining American in the draw after U.S. teammate Sabrina Sobhy exited the tournament in a four-game loss against Egypt’s six seed Nour El Tayeb Sunday night.
