Team USA’s Olivia Weaver and Amanda Sobhy headline the inaugural Silicon Valley Open presented by Oracle NetSuite this week, October 11-16, at SquashZone in Redwood Shores, California.
Weaver, world No. 4, leads the draw as the top seed with the positive momentum of a semifinal appearance at the Qatar Classic last week. Weaver will be making her first professional appearance in the San Francisco bay area since 2021, and is seeded to meet three seed Sivasangari Subramaniam in the semifinals.
Sobhy, who continues her comeback from a second Achilles rupture, enters the Silicon Valley open as a two-time defending champion of the Oracle NetSuite Open in 2021 and 2022. The world No.16 will aim for more bay area success in a new tournament venue as the four seed in the bottom half of the draw. Sobhy is building on progressive tournament performances having reached the second round of the Egyptian Open in August and Paris Open quarterfinals in September. Sobhy is seeded to face England’s two seed Georgina Kennedy in the semifinals.
Egypt’s world No. 5 Mazen Hesham and world No. 6 Karim Abdel Gawad lead the men’s draws as the top two seeds. Team USA’s world No. 30 Timmy Brownell is set for his bay area professional debut and will face England’s Patrick Rooney in the first round. San Francisco-based Shahjahan Khan will take on Qatar’s Abdulla Al Tamimi in the first round.
The tournament boasts local talent in the wild card positions. Riya Navani, who competed for Team USA at the World Juniors this summer, and Riva Bhagwati, a top-ranked junior, will both aim to notch a first-round win for the home crowd in the women’s draw. Squash Zone professional Bransten Ming will aim for a first-round upset against former Penn star Aly Abou Eleinen.
