The U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams produced four pool play wins on the opening day of the 2024 WSF Men’s and Women’s World Team Championships Monday, December 9, at the Hong Kong Football Club.
Both U.S. squads entered four-team pools with two matches on opening day of the World Teams–the first time in tournament history that the men’s and women’s events were held concurrently.
The first slate of matches saw both squads produce a clean sweep of results. The U.S. women dismantled a Chinese squad with 3-0 wins from Amanda Sobhy, Marina Stefanoni and Caroline Fouts. The U.S. men opened up their tournament with 3-0 wins over Kuwait courtesy of Timmy Brownell, Spencer Lovejoy and Dillon Huang.
The second slate of matches saw the U.S. pull through close matches to put themselves in position to clinch winning the pool on Tuesday. The U.S. women’s match against Scotland came down to the No. 3s after Scotland No. 1 Georgia Adderly upset Sobhy in three games, while No. 2 Stefanoni earned a point for the U.S. Making her senior Team USA debut in Hong Kong, Fouts stepped up to clinch the match for the U.S. in three games against Ellie Jones.
In the men’s second match of the day against Germany, No. 1 Timmy Brownell and No. 2 Spencer Lovejoy provided crucial wins to earn the team victory. Brownell edged world no. 33 Raphael Kandra in a five-game battle 13-11, 3-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7 in fifty-seven minutes. Lovejoy then earned the winning point against former world No. 3 Simon Roesner, coming back from 2-1 down to win 11-9 11-13 10-12 11-8 11-1.
The U.S. women will close out pool play against Germany at 2am ET, while the men will close out pool play against China at 4:30am ET. Watch the matches live on wsfworldteams.com.
