Amanda Sobhy won her first professional title since coming back from her second ruptured achilles, defeating top seed and world No. 8 Georgina Kennedy in the German Open final Sunday, March 23, in Hamburg.
The American entered the draw as the tournament’s three seed and progressed to the final without dropping a game, including a semifinal win against two seed and world No. 14 Nada Abbas.
Sobhy continued her momentum into the final, which she confidently won 11-8, 11-9, 11-9 in thirty-four minutes.
In what was her third PSA final appearance of the season, the German Open win serves as the best indication yet that Sobhy is nearing a return to the same form that saw her reach the world No. 3 ranking.
“I’m really proud of myself,” Sobhy said. “It’s been a long road to get back, I’ve been in three finals this season–which is my comeback season–to be able to get over the hump, especially over a great player. This win really means a lot.”
The win sends Sobhy up to world No. 12 this week–an increase of three positions–in what is her highest ranking without her pinned ranking points earlier this season.
“I’ve had the last five weeks to really put in the work with my team and I think it showed this week,” Sobhy said. “Honestly, when you put in the work, I trust my body, I trust everything I’ve done with my team, and I can just go out there and have fun and that’s what I did. It was a really nice feeling and I think it showed in my squash. I’m moving well, I’m feeling good and I’m enjoying my game so I think I can do really great things this season.”
Sobhy heads north to England this week where she is the six seed in the PSA Gold Optasia Open.
