World No. 4 Olivia Weaver comfortably advanced to the second round of the PSA Platinum El Gouna Open with a 3-0 win, while U.S. teammates Amanda Sobhy and Timmy Brownell lost out in the first round Saturday, April 12, in Egypt.
El Gouna, the first PSA Platinum Tournament since January’s Tournament of Champions, saw three American representatives qualify for the draw of thirty two.
Weaver, the tournament’s four seed, made quick work against Egypt’s world No. 37 Menna Hamed, 11-3, 11-6, 11-3 in twenty-one minutes to book her spot in the second round. Weaver will enjoy a rest day Sunday before taking on Malaysia’s Rachel Arnold Monday at 2pm ET. Watch the match live on squash.tv.
Elsewhere in the women’s draw, world No. 10 Amanda Sobhy lost out in a grueling five-game battle against former world No. 3 Joelle King. Sobhy had beaten King in a five-game marathon just last month at the Optasia Open, but the Kiwi got her revenge in Egypt 14-16, 16-14, 12-10, 4-11, 11-9 in sixty-seven minutes.
World No. 33 Timmy Brownell fell short against India’s world No. 33, exiting the tournament 11-8, 11-5, 11-7 in thirty-six minutes.
