Eight Americans, led by world No. 4 Olivia Weaver and world No. 8 Amanda Sobhy, will take on the world’s best this week during the 2024-2025 PSA World Championships presented by the Walter Family at the University Club of Chicago and LakeShore Sport and Fitness, May 9-16.
The PSA World Championships brings 128 of the world’s best players together competing for a record prize purse of $1.3 million, vying for the title of World Champions. World No. 4 Olivia Weaver enters her fifth PSA World Championships with the best chance of her career to reach the world’s individual summit. Weaver has cemented herself as the world’s No. 4 this season and has established a new level of consistency amongst the world’s best having reached five consecutive PSA Platinum semifinals this weekend.
Weaver enters the World Championships as the four seed in the bottom half of the draw and is seeded to face two seed and seven time world champion Nour El Sherbini in the semifinals. Weaver opens up her campaign against Malaysia’s Aifa Azman Saturday, May 10, at 6pm local time, 7pm ET.
Sobhy has climbed back up the world rankings this season following her return from a second torn Achilles. Sobhy’s positive momentum includes winning her second Bronze title of the season last weekend and enters her sixth career PSA World Championships appearance with a season-high ranking of world No. 8, and a 9/16 tournament seeding. Sobhy is slated in the same quarter of the draw as Weaver should both players progress to the quarterfinals. Sobhy opens her tournament against Malaysia’s Ainaa Amani Saturday at 2pm local time, 3pm ET.
Marina Stefanoni enters the draw with a season and career-high ranking of world No. 28 after winning the largest PSA title of her career last weekend. The twenty-two-year-old enters the top half of the draw and will be in action Friday night against Indian qualifier Anahat Singh at 6pm local time, 7pm ET.
Marina is joined by younger sister, Lucie who qualified by winning the Pan American Qualifier, and faces Egypt’s Nada Abbas in the first round. Stanford’s Riya Navani will make her world championship debut against England’s world No. 18 Jasmine Hutton Friday.
The men’s draw will have three American representatives. Timmy Brownell and Shahjahan Khan will face each other in the first round Saturday at 7:30pm local time, 6:30pm ET.
After winning the U.S. qualifier, Nick Spizzirri will make his World Championships debut against Germany’s Raphael Kandra Saturday at 6:45pm local time, 7:45pm ET.
