Team USA’s top-ten-ranked Olivia Weaver and Amanda Sobhy are both through to the last sixteen at the $1.3 million PSA World Championships presented by the Walter Family after first and second rounds wins, May 10-11, at the University Club of Chicago and Lakeshore Sport & Fitness.
A third round win for both Weaver and Sobhy would set up an All-American quarterfinal between them, but both players will need to get through difficult opponents in the third round first on Tuesday, May 14.
Sobhy, world No. 8, has progressed through the draw effortlessly, spending just eighteen and twenty-three minutes on court in her opening matches. Sobhy dispatched Malaysia’s Ainaa Amani 11-3, 11-2, 11-3 in the first round, then took out Egypt’s Kenzy Ayman in the second round 11-4, 11-3, 11-4.
The Havard graduate will face a difficult third round test against Cornell graduate and world No. 9 Sivasangari Subramaniam. Sobhy and Subramaniam have already faced each other twice in 2025, with Sobhy winning their Tournament of Champions first round and Subramaniam winning the Cincinnati Cup final in February–both in five games. Their third round match on the world stage will take place on the glass court Tuesday at 6:30pm local time, 7:30pm ET.
After a routine first-round win over Malaysian Aifa Azman, Weaver met a top-twenty opponent in the second round in the form of world No. 19 Rachel Arnold. Weaver overcame the Malaysian 11-5, 11-2, 11-13, 11-5 in thirty-eight minutes on the glass court to reach her third consecutive World Championships third round.
Weaver will aim to reach her second career World Championships quarterfinal against Egypt’s world No. 12 Salma Hany Tuesday at 5:30pm local time, 6:30pm ET.
