Stefanoni Set for First Major Third Round Appearance Against World No. 1; Weaver and Sobhy Advance

Marina Stefanoni is through to her first career third round appearance in a PSA Platinum or Diamond event where she will face world No. 1 Nouran Gohar, while U.S. teammates Olivia Weaver and Amanda Sobhy join her in the last sixteen after wins June 1-2, in Birmingham, England.

The British Open is one of just three PSA Diamond events this season with qualifying draws, forty-eight player main draws and $697,000 prize money up for grabs.

The twenty-two-year-old entered her second career British Open ranked world No. 29, and opened up with a first-round win against against Egypt’s world No. 38 Mariam Metwally in three games. Stefanoni met England’s world No. 23 Lucy Turmel. On Sunday, Stefanoni recorded her fourth career win against Turmel 11-13, 11-2, 13-11, 11-5 in fifty-three minutes to reach her first career round of sixteen in a PSA Platinum or Diamond event. Stefanoni will now face world No. 1 and top seed Nouran Gohar on the glass court Tuesday at 1:45pm local time, 8:45am ET.

While Stefanoni recorded two matches over the weekend, Sobhy and Weaver joined the fold as top eight seeds in the bottom half of the draw Monday.

Weaver, world No. 4 and the three seed, opened up her account with an 11-7, 11-3, 11-7 win against Egypt’s world No. 28 Zeina Mickawy. Weaver awaits nineteen-year-old world No. 14 Fayrouz Abouelkheir in what will be their third match up of the season. Weaver won their previous two matches at the Qatar Classic and U.S. Open in the fall, and will face the young Egyptian again Wednesday at 5:30pm local time, 12:30pm ET.

Amanda Sobhy is through to the British Open third round for the sixth time in her career after dispatching Egypt’s world No. 30 and current Penn star Malak Khafagy in three games. Sobhy, world No. 10 and the eight seed, will face fellow Harvard graduate Hana Moataz in the third round Wednesday at noon local time, 7am ET.
