Team USA Produces Fourteen British Junior Open Quarterfinalists

Diya Yadav (L) and Yassin Shalaby (R)

Fourteen Americans will represent Team USA in the British Junior Open quarterfinals, Saturday, January 3, in Birmingham. The U.S. contingent has enjoyed a strong start to the tournament with thirty-one of fifty-seven players reaching the round of sixteen over the first two days of play.

Sisters Vivienne (GU15) and Charlotte Sze (GU17) marked their third consecutive BJO quarterfinal appearance, while Christian Cepella (BU19) and Yassin Shalaby (BU19) will make their second straight quarterfinal appearance.

Shalaby, a 9/16 seed, avenged his U.S. Junior Open final loss against Malaysia’s 5/8 seed Nickhileswar Moganasundharam in five games.

USJO BU13 champion and 9/16 seed Teddy Edwards won an all-American round off sixteen match against teammate Yiden Chen in his tournament debut.

Diya Yadav (GU19) and Julia Wong (GU11) exceeded their 9/16 seeds to reach their first BJO quarterfinals. Yadav will face France’s two seed Lauren Baltayan, while Wong will play Egypt’s top seed Talia Eslam.
