Team USA’s Marina Stefanoni captured the largest title of her career–the PSA Copper Richmond Open–sending the twenty-two-year-old into the world’s top thirty rankings for the first time in her career Sunday, May 4, at the Country Club of Virginia.
Stefanoni entered the $28,750 Copper event as the world No. 32 and tournament’s three seed, and progressed through the draw with a 3-0 win over five seed and world No. 39 Lucy Beecroft in the quarterfinals.
Stefanoni then upset top seed and world No. 27 Tomato Ho in a five-game semifinal 11-7, 7-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-4.
The American clinched the title with her second top thirty upset of the tournament over two seed and world No. 24 Lucy Turmel, winning the final 10-12, 11-8, 11-9, 11-3 in forty-seven minutes.
With the win, the Harvard graduate ascended four positions up to world No. 28–a new career high. Stefanoni will shift focus to the 2024-2025 PSA World Championships, May 9-16, in Chicago.
