SL Green U.S. Men’s Squash Championship: Day One

The SL Green U.S. Men’s Squash Championship semifinals will be a repeat of 2013 as one and four seeds, Chris Gordon and Todd Harrity, and three and two seeds, Gilly Lane and Julian Illingworth, book their spots in Saturday’s semifinals on the McArthur Squash Center’s blue and orange glass court.

Gordon v KhanThe top four seeds all advanced in straight games during Friday evening’s quarterfinals. In 2013, Gordon defeated Harrity 12-10, 11-5, 11-7, while Lane pulled off the upset of the tournament in five games against top seed Illingworth 7-11, 11-7, 11-9, 7-11, 11-6.

The U.S. Women’s Squash Championships quarterfinals begin at 10:00am, and will be streamed live. One seed Amanda Sobhy will travel from Toronto, Canada tomorrow morning as she returns from the Women’s Squash Assosiation $25, 000 Granite Club Cup. Tonight, Sobhy upset Egyptian world No. 13 Omneya Abdel Kawy in three games to win her largest prize money WSA tournament to date. Last weekend, Sobhy won her third consecutive College Squash Association individual title, and now could collect her third title in a week should she win her second national title in Charlottesville.

The SL Green U.S. Men’s Squash Championship round of sixteen has concluded at the McArthur Squash Center in Charlottesville, Virginia, with all eight seeds advancing in the draw of sixteen.

Harrity v ThompsonWith matches on both the blue and orange glass court and Court 3 streamed on livestream, defending U.S. Champion Chris Gordon led off the afternoon against Anthony Bardaro, handily defeating the Boston-based twenty-eight-year-old 11-7, 11-4, 11-6. The other top four seeds all dispatched their opponents in three games.

Two matches went down to the wire as Chris Hanson recovered from losing the first and fourth games to win in five against former junior circuit opponent, Portland’s Adam Perkiomaki. Squash Doubles Association professional Graham Bassett came back from a four point deficit in the fifth game to defeat former George Washington player Omar Sobhy.
