U.S. Women’s Squash Championship: Quarterfinals

All four women’s seeds advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Women’s Squash Championship in Saturday morning’s quarterfinals.

Princeton University-bound Olivia Fiechter and seven-time U.S. Champion and world No. 29 Latasha Khan led off the morning on the McArthur Squash Center’s blue and orange glass court, streamed live online to a global audience.

Khan v FiecterAlthough Fiechter extended her first game to 11-11 against second-seeded Khan, who is twenty-three years older than eighteen-year-old Fiechter, Khan closed out the first game 13-11. Khan continued her momentum in the second and third games to win the match 11-9, 11-5.

Three seed Sabrina Sobhy and twenty-four-year-old Harvard University graduate Cecelia Cortes followed on court. Cortes sped to a 1-0 lead against they younger Sobhy sister with an 11-2 first game win. Seventeen-year-old Sobhy fought back in the second game to level the match at 1-1 with a 12-10 win. Sobhy remained in control for the remainder of the match advancing in four games 2-11, 12-10, 11-8, 11-5.

Fourth-seeded world No. 53 Olivia Blatchford and Fiechter’s soon-t0-be Princeton teammate Maria Elena Ubina contested the third match of the morning. Trailing 2-0, Ubina renewed her semifinal hopes in the third game winning 11-6, but was unable to force a fifth game as Blatchford clinched a close fourth game 13-11.

Sabrina v Cortes 2After winning the largest prize money Women’s Squash Association event of her young career Friday night, the $25, 000 Granite Club Cup in Toronto, Amanda Sobhy showed no signs of fatigue in her quarterfinal against world No. 61 Kristen Lange. After a string of early morning flights to Charlottesville, Sobhy managed to dispatch Lange in three games 11-8, 11-3, 11-4.
