American world No. 59 Chris Gordon recorded the highest-ranked upset of his career Wednesday night in the first round of the $25, 000 PSA Northern Ontario Open, upsetting world No. 12 Marwan Elshorbagy in three games and thirty-five minutes.
The twenty-one-year old Egyptian entered the first round match having won both previous encounters against the 2013 U.S. champion. In Sudbury, Gordon went on to claim his first win over Elshorbagy 11-7, 11-8, 11-9, topping his 2012 U.S. Open upset over then world No. 15 Hisham Ashour.
The twenty-eight-year old from New York City now faces Canadian World No. 55 Shawn Delierre in Thursday’s quarterfinals at 5pm ET. Eighth-seeded Delierre held of U.S. champion Todd Harrity in a four-game opening match Wednesday night.
Earlier in the day, American world No. 112 Chris Hanson lost a heart-breaking qualifying final to Mexican Arturo Salazar 12-10 in the fifth game. Immediately after his loss, Hanson admirably stayed on court to play with a local junior who is volunteering at the tournament.
