U.S. Junior Men’s Team Falls to Malaysia

The United States fell to fifth-seeded Malaysia 1-2 in the first round of the World Junior Men’s Team Championships 1-12 playoffs at the Wanderers Club in Windhoek, Namibia. The U.S. Team had previously lost to Egypt 2-1,  finishing second in Group A Sunday.

Timothy Brownell, No. 3 on the U.S. ladder, was the standout win from the Malaysian match defeating Darren Chan Ti Luun in three decisive games. Derek Hsue, No. 1 in the ladder for the U.S. and who had been rested for the Egypt match, battled against Malaysia’s Mohammad Syafiq Kamal, pushing the  No. 220 on the PSA Tour, to four games, but was unable to capture a win. Fellow teammate, Mason Ripka, lost in three games to his opponent, Eain Yow Ng.

The Malaysian Team is now set to compete against England in the quarterfinals Tuesday, while the U.S. will continue to compete for 9-12 places against Colombia Wednesday.
