Team USA Ends Pan American Juniors With Silver and Bronze Team Medals

Team USA ended the 2017 Pan American Junior Championships with a total of five medals, including girls silver and boys bronze in the final team competition in Asuncion, Paraguay, Friday, June 30.

After sweeping three pool play matches, the top-seeded U.S. girls team made a run to the final with a 3-0 quarterfinal win against Brazil and a 2-1 semifinal victory over 3/4 seeds Colombia.

In the final, two seeds Mexico upset the U.S. 2-1 to claim the country’s first of two team gold medals, while Team USA collected its second silver medal of the tournament.

The U.S. boys went 2-1 in Group B with a default against Argentina, win against hosts Paraguay and a loss against two seeds Mexico to earn a 4/6 seed in the playoff rounds.

The U.S. topped 4/6 seeds Chile 2-1 to set up a semifinal match against top-seeded Colombia. The title favorites held off the U.S. challenge 2-1, earning the U.S. boys their first medal of the tournament, bronze.

In the final, Mexico came back from 1-0 down to upset Colombia 2-1, earning a second team gold medal in Paraguay.

Previously in the individual and doubles competitions, Team USA’s Sumrin Mudgil and Riya Mital earned individual silver and bronze, respectively, while Jane Pincus and Emily Rose earned doubles bronze.
