Team USA will aim to record a thirteenth place finish against either Canada or Kuwait on the final day of the 2019 WSF Men’s World Team Championship Saturday, December 21, at Squash on Fire in Washington, DC.
The U.S. side, who entered the tournament seeded twelfth, has experienced mixed fortunes throughout the week. After a promising display against defending champions and top seeds Egypt to open up the tournament, the U.S. sustained a difficult defeat against Switzerland in pool play, consigning them to the 13-23 play off bracket.
The U.S. rebounded with their first victory of the tournament over Jamaica on Wednesday, courtesy of two 3-0 victories from Todd Harrity and Andrew Douglas. The U.S. continued the positive momentum against sixteen seeds Argentina Friday afternoon. Harrity gave the U.S. a 1-0 lead at the No. 1 position, but Argentina leveled the score at 1-all in the No. 2 position as Leandro Romiglio defeated Douglas in four games.
Veteran Chris Gordon stepped up in the No. 3 position to provide the U.S. with an important 3-0 win against Gonzalo Miranda to send Team USA into the 13/14th place playoff on Saturday.
“I was really excited to play today,” said Gordon. I’m feeling really fresh and I’ve been making sure that I’m prepared all week for these moments. I love playing for the US and being able to play a deciding match, I was really happy to get out there and play today. I’ve played Gonzalo before and the last time I actually lost to him. I knew how dangerous he was and knew he deserved a lot of respect. I prepared really well and I enjoyed every moment of it.”
Team USA will close out their tournament on the glass show court against Canada or Kuwait Saturday, December 21, at 12:30pm. Watch live on SquashTV and PSA World Tour Facebook Live.
