Amanda Sobhy and Weaver Reach Windy City Open Quarterfinals

Team USA’s Amanda Sobhy upset world No. 7 Satomi Watanabe to reach her sixth consecutive quarterfinal, while world No. 3 Olivia Weaver advanced in straight games at  the Windy City Open presented by the Walter Family Saturday, February 7, at the University Club of Chicago.

Sobhy recorded her first top ten-ranked upset of the season in a fiery display as she defeated Watanabe to maintain her quarterfinal streak at the Windy City Open.

The pair contested the opening match of the day in Cathedral Hall with a pumped-up Amanda Sobhy feeding off the energetic home crowd. Sobhy showed her top ten in the world credentials by defeating the world No. 7 11-6, 9-11, 11-6, 11-8 in forty-two minutes.

“I think I’ve been really close to beating some top 8 players this season, but it hasn’t quite clicked,” Sobhy said. “But today it was all about staying loose and free and playing the squash that I’m capable of. It’s been tricky in the first half of the season, but I’m so glad I could get over the finish line today.”

Sobhy will face world No. 2 Amina Orfi in the last eight Monday at 5pm local time, 6pm ET.

U.S. teammate Olivia Weaver, who became the first American since Sobhy to reach world No. 3 last week, cruised into her second Windy City Open quarterfinal with a 3-0 victory against Malaysia’s world No. 21 Aira Azman. Weaver will face Egypt’s world No. 8 Fayrouz Abouelkheir in a rematch of their Tournament of Champions semifinal Monday at 7pm local time, 8pm ET.
