Team USA’s Todd Harrity acquitted himself well in front of a vocal J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions crowd Friday afternoon, pushing world No. 22 Fares Dessouki into a close four-game opening match.
The twenty-two-year-old Egyptian ended Harrity’s hopes of winning on home soil 11-6, 8-11, 11-6, 11-8 in fifty-two minutes. Harrity was making his third consecutive appearance as the tournament’s wild card, and put in his best performance so far. Despite the loss, the Princeton graduate was pleased with his play and overall progress on the tour. The match is available for replay on SquashTV.
“It’s always special and exciting to play here, ” Harrity said. “It was great to have so many friends and supporters behind me. It’s always a bit edgy when playing on a stage like this and while the loss is disappointing there’s lots of positives to take.”
Saturday’s action in Grand Central Terminal will involve Americans Olivia Blatchford and Amanda Sobhy with the duo set to compete on the NetSuite Challenge Court in the women’s first round.
Blatchford’s main draw appearance comes after two three-game qualifying victories Thursday and Friday at local clubs. The twenty-two-year old has the daunting task of playing England’s world No. 1 Laura Massaro at 2pm ET.
Sobhy, who reached a career-high ranking of No. 8 this month, will take on Welsh qualifier Deon Saffery at 4:00pm ET.
