U.S. Junior Men’s Team Defeats Jordan to Reach World Juniors Quarterfinals

The U.S. Junior Men’s Team are through to the World Junior Championship quarterfinals following a 2-1 win against Jordan in the first round of the 1-2 playoffs Sunday at Enjoy Squash in Bielso-Biala, Poland.

After pushing the world junior champion to five games yesterday, Andrew Douglas led off the match against Jordan with another five-game effort. Douglas traded games with Mohammad Al Sarraj until the Jordanian edged the U.S. junior champion 12-10 in the fifth to give Jordan a 1-0 lead.

Sam Scherl followed on court and leveled the match at 1-1 with a three-game victory against Ibrahim Abdulaban, leaving the match to be decided by Team USA’s Spencer Lovejoy and Jordan’s Hamza Albuzaidi.

Albuzaidi took the opening game 12-10, but Lovejoy clawed back to win the next three games 11-4, 11-6, 11-7, handing the U.S. a 2-1 and a berth in the quarterfinals.

The U.S. will face third-seeded France Monday at 2:30pm local time, 8:30am ET.
